Ten Commandments in Law

In my opinion our laws and society are very much based on religion. Even though we all know the concept of separation of church and state, we realize that our laws are based off of morality which we gain from our churches and religious beliefs. We also know that traditional natural law is based off of a “higher law” and that higher law is God’s law. Abortion for example is something that is a very big deal in the United States today. Some activist’s say that it is a woman’s right to have an abortion if she so feels that she needs to have one. While others view abortion as disobeying God, their morals, and an easy way out of a situation they did not want to be in. Our country gets around the concept of abortion by calling it murder. No matter which you believe in, this is obviously a belief of a higher law, and in fact is not a separation of church and state. Although the concept of separation of church and state sounds good on paper, it is easy to see that, many of our laws are based off morality and religion. No one in their right mind thinks that it is all right to murder a person. Everyone in the United States learns this from when they are little kids. Anyone who has ever looked over the Ten Commandments knows that it says that you should not murder. That example, in fact shows that our laws are based off of religion.

  1. I agree with your post regarding the Ten Commandments and Law. The Ten Commandments are laws proscribed by God and some of these laws have been recreated in our own justice system. As much as our country desires the separation of church and state, law, morals and religion are unfortunately related.

  2. I agree it is hard to say that our society would be as good as it is without religion in law. I mean people wouldn't see things as being a sin or against their religion. They would only seeing it as being against the law which would not be as good of a deterrent.

  3. I have to ask, is it that these laws were prescribed to us as laws that were so universal that they would easily be accepted by all individuals. While it seems easy to say that they are laws that were handed down from a divine being, is it possible that they are so universal to human nature that we can say that they are simply universally conceived. Abortion is wrong to some people not because god commanded them to think that, it is wrong for some people because it is the taking of a human life. The real issue between pro-choice and pro-life individuals is a simple definition of when a life starts and when it is no longer abortion, but murder. The crux of the issue is a simple definition no a set of higher laws.

  4. I agree that the laws that we have in our society are greatly influenced by religion. The Ten Commandments contain a number of natural laws which can apply to any society, whether it be the ancient Judeo-Christian societies in the middle east or our own modern day 21st century society.
