The Chorus and Clytaemestra

It is very clear that the Chorus was not very fond of Clytaemestra or Aeigisthus. This is apparent through their approval of Orestes’ plan of avenging Agamemnon’s death. There are several reasons that could explain the hatred of Clytaemestra. One reason in particular could be her weakness as a woman. Women in Argos have no power and all of a sudden this is changed with the death of Agamemnon. I believe that the Chorus does not feel that a woman is fit to run a kingdom, especially with the adulterous Aeigisthus by her side. Furthermore, we cannot forget the fact that she plotted and carried out the murder of their King. That alone should supply a reason for the Chorus’ decision to join Orestes’ side.

Also, not only is Clytaemestra considered weak, but also emotional. Both of these characteristics are shown through her reaction to the sacrifice of her daughter. This sacrifice was to provide security and power to Argos. By starting a war in order to get Helen back, Argos would rein superior. Her daughter needed to be sacrificed in order for the ships to actually get to Troy. Clytaemestra did not see the big picture instead she only thought of herself. She only thought of her loss instead of what was to be gained by the whole kingdom. This action could have made the Chorus consider her as unfaithful or selfish. Their version of justice was to conspire with Orestes to murder the woman who brought doom upon their kingdom. In their eyes this was the only way for serenity to rule in the end.

  1. I think a big reason that the chorus wanted Orestes to kill Clytamestra was the fact that the Chorus was made out of Clyaemestra's slaves. The points in this post are very valid and can very possible be true but I believe that the Chorus had more to gain with Clyamestra out of power than with her in power.

  2. I agree with the points Jessica made in her post. The Chorus obviously has many valid reasons to dislike Clytaemestra. I also agree with what Chris said about the Chorus. The Chorus is made up of different people for each play. It would be interesting to see how the chorus from the Agamemnon play would react to the idea of Orestes murdering Clytaemestra.
