Women Image and Sexism in Sports

As we all know women always complain about they don't have the same power as men. Truth is we don't have the same power as men in society because our laws came from a male traditional view point. Even though today we have the right to vote and we are involve in politics and the government there are still issues that bother me. For example many Americans love sports in our country. Female sports isn't as popular as male sports. First if a female plays sports people sometimes automatically think she is a lesbian. Some males look at females to be manly when they play sports. Females sports don't get high ratings and don't get publicized as much. I feel sometimes ESPN airs a women sports because they don't want to be view as sexist. When ESPN airs a women sport their TV ratings go down at time. Here at Penn State Penn State Football and Women's Volleyball team are in season at the same time. One can see its all about Penn State Football when reality the Women's Volleyball is the best team at Penn State but when you read the Daily Collegian they have a section for the Penn State Football team. The only time I remember a women's team being popular around campus was the Women's Basketball Team Coach didn't approve of her player being a Lesbian. Yes this shows that a women coach didn't support a lesbian on her team but this scandal took away from how good the women's basketball team was good a few years ago. I feel we don't have enough support from the media about women sports .I feel women sports makes ESPN countdown when is something negative for example ESPN played the WNBA fight so many times then a womens basketball game. As we all know everything takes time because women just started getting thier shine in politics and we also have famous athletes representing for women sports. I bet a someone can name a Mens basketball team roster before a women basketball team roster.

  1. I totally agree with you. Maybe if women sports were more publicized then people would start to come around and they would be watched more. I also think that more people have actually started to watch women sports more than in the past. I remember last year during my family Christmas Party we sat around the TV not watching a male's sport team or waiting for NFl playoffs news, but instead we were watching the National Championship game for volleyball. I do think that women sports just need a little support to get more popular.

  2. I feel that women's sports teams are not as popular as male teams due to the fact that a majority of audiences would prefer watching men over women in sport related activities. If there was a Women's football team, I highly doubt large numbers of individuals would attend as a result of stereotypes placed upon women regarding their strength and athleticism.

  3. I agree with your comment Jessica that if we publicized more about women sports more people will come around and watch it more. Christie I do agree if there was a women’s football a large number of people would not come out and attend which sucks because once again stereotypes that were created by society which I feel we need to break away from

  4. While stereotypes play a big role in why people view women's sports as inferior, they aren't the only reason. It's not just the perception of the public, it's the reality of the situation that female professional athletes don't do the same things that men do. Example: dunking in basketball. If women did spectacular 360 degree slam-dunks, you can bet your ass people would pay attention. Lay-ups... not so much. I can do a lay-up. I want to see pro athletes doing stuff I can't do. That's why I watch them instead of myself in a mirror.

  5. I think that most likely, the majority of people that watch sports are men. That means that what occurs mostly is men watching mens' sports. If women really want more equality when it comes to the visibility of their sports, then they should start watching them. Seeing as there's close to an equal percentage of men as there are women in America, it would be easy for women to have their sports become more popular and visible, it would just mostly be women watching them. Buy a jersey, attend some games, and when revenue increases more sponsors will put money into the leagues. Until then, ESPN is going to report on the sports that their audience cares about.
